What Malaysian film campaigns can learn from Dune: Part Two’s TikTok rollout

A look at how participation and release information can work together—and a smaller-scale approach to consider locally.

The key takeaway

Our reading of this campaign: give people a clear way to participate, then make the film’s details and viewing options easy to find. For a local release, that means planning the content idea and the next audience action together.

A global franchise has resources and an existing fan base that a local release may not share. A useful breakdown should therefore identify an approach worth testing, rather than promise the same outcome.

What TikTok reported about the campaign.

In its 8 August 2024 announcement, TikTok described Warner Bros.’ use of Spotlight for Dune: Part Two. The activity included a curated search hub, a movie anchor and detail page, plus a creator prompt offering custom profile frames for related videos. [1]

TikTok also reported that it was the leading source of traffic to the ticketing hub during opening weekend. This is a platform-reported result: the announcement does not provide an independently audited ticket-sales attribution or enough information to calculate the campaign’s return on investment. [1]

A smaller-scale approach for a Malaysian release.

The following is a hypothetical planning suggestion from HN Marketing Lab, not a description of the Dune campaign or a claim of tested local results. It does not require access to Spotlight, and does not assume that the same platform features are available for your title.

Content

One simple prompt.

For a mystery film: “Which character would you trust?” Use an approved, spoiler-free clip.

Brief

Room for a point of view.

Supply approved assets, release details and boundaries. Agree on disclosures and approvals.

Destination

One useful next step.

Link to an official release page or available ticketing destination. Check links before launch.

Distribution

A job for each channel.

Ads for distribution, pages for coverage, and participants for an agreed content brief.

Measure the steps separately.

Traffic is a step. Ticket sales are a separate result.

Report delivery, approved submissions and available clicks separately. Use suitable ticketing data before making sales claims.

A useful question for your next brief.

After someone notices your film, what should they do next? Decide that before commissioning more posts. It gives the creative brief, channel selection and reporting a shared purpose.
